Delhi Police Arrest Fugitive In 2016 Robbery And Murder Case

The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has apprehended Vinod Sahani, a fugitive wanted in a 2016 robbery and murder case, after he had evaded capture for four years. Sahani, who jump bail during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, finally arrest in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, following a meticulous operation.

The crime occurred in the early hours of June 16, 2016, when Sahani and four accomplices executed a violent robbery at a farmhouse in DLF Chattarpur, Delhi. The group, armed with guns, held the residents hostage and stole valuables. In the process, they murdered a 39-year-old man who attempted to resist.

Although the suspects were apprehend at the scene, Sahani grant interim bail in June 2020 amid the pandemic. However, he failed to return to jail after his bail expired, opting instead to go into hiding. Changing his appearance, address, and phone number frequently, Sahani successfully avoided arrest for the next four years. In December 2022, he declare a ‘Proclaimed Offender’ by the court.

Locating And Capturing Sahani

A specialized team from the Anti-Robbery and Snatching Cell (ARSC) of the Crime Branch, led by Inspector Robin Tyagi and supervised by ACP Arvind Kumar, was tasked with locating and capturing Sahani. The team employed technical surveillance and local intelligence, and enlisted secret informers to monitor his whereabouts.

The breakthrough came when Head Constable Gaurav Chaudhary received a tip-off indicating that Sahani was hiding on the outskirts of Muzaffarpur. After weeks of planning, the police learned that Sahani would be traveling on National Highway-57 near Sitamarhi, Bihar. They set up an operation on the highway and successfully arrested him.

During questioning, Sahani revealed that he had deliberately avoided returning to jail and had been living in a makeshift shack in Muzaffarpur while working as a commercial driver to support himself. Prior to the 2016 case, Sahani had also faced charges under the Arms Act in Delhi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Amit Goel, commended the team’s dedication and effort in tracking down and arresting Sahani. “The Delhi Police remains resolute in ensuring that individuals who attempt to evade the law are ultimately bring him to justice,” Goel mention.
