A case of assault at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital recently came to light where a senior neurosurgeon, Dr Satnam Singh Chabbra, who also serves as the chairman of neurology at the hospital, was allegedly attacked by his patient. According to the officials, the 21-year-old patient, identified as Rajkumar, pounced on the doctor with a knife in his chamber during a consultation meeting. Rajkumar, hailing from Bihar, had been receiving treatment under Dr Chabbra and had come for a consultation on Tuesday.
Unexpectedly, Rajkumar became agitated during the meeting and assaulted the doctor using a small knife he had concealed in his pocket, as per hospital sources. Fortunately, timely intervention by the hospital security prevented any severe injury to the doctor. They managed to subdue Rajkumar and handed him over to the police.
The surgeon sustained a minor cut on his thumb during the incident. In response to the complaint filed by the surgeon, the police have taken action against the patient under the provisions of the Prevention of Violence against Doctors, Medical Professionals, and Medical Institution Bill, 2018.
Earlier this month, a similar incident occurred in Kelera where two men attacked a house surgeon at the Ernakulam General Hospital. The attack was consequent to Dr Hareesh Muhammad questioning the men, Josneel and Roshan, for harassing his woman colleague.
The two suspects had come to meet someone who was undergoing treatment at the hospital. They got into an altercation with Dr Hareesh Muhammad when the doctors were sitting near the cafeteria.
