Delhi Lieutenant Governor Calls For Elections To Form New Legislative Assembly

Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, has officially announced elections for the new Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, according to a notification from the Chief Electoral Officer. This decision follows the Election Commission of India’s recommendation.

The notification stated, “In accordance with the provisions outlined in Section 15 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and sub-section (2) of the same section, the Lieutenant Governor has called upon all the Assembly constituencies within Delhi to conduct elections for the Legislative Assembly.”

“The Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi is hereby pleased to call upon all the Assembly Constituencies in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, to elect members to the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, in accordance with the provisions of the said Act and of the rules and orders made thereunder,” it further added.

This call to action paves the way for a General Election, as mandated by law, to establish a new Legislative Assembly. The election will follow the legal framework and guidelines provided by the Election Commission of India.

The dissolution of the current Assembly will likely take place on 23 February 2025, unless an earlier dissolution occurs, marking the beginning of the electoral process in the city.

Voters will soon cast their ballots to elect new representatives for the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Following the announcement of the election dates, the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect in the national capital and will remain in place until the election process concludes.

Delhi Assembly Election Timeline

The Delhi Assembly elections will take place on 5 February, with vote counting likely for 8 February.

The last date for nomination filings is 17 January, with the scrutiny of nominations set for 18 January, and the last date for withdrawal is 20 January.

The Congress, after ruling Delhi for 15 years, faced defeats in the last two assembly elections, failing to secure any seats. In contrast, the AAP won a sweeping victory in the 2020 elections, claiming 62 of 70 seats, while the BJP managed only eight.
