New Delhi, Aug 29: The Delhi High Court will hear the bail plea of former JNU student Umar Khalid on October 7. Khalid is accused under UAPA in connection with the larger conspiracy behind the Delhi riots. The bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Girish Kathpalia will also hear the bail pleas of student activist Sharjeel Imam, United Against Hate founder Khalid Saifi, and Gulfisha Fatima on the same day.
Umar Khalid’s lawyer informed the court that the Delhi Police has not yet filed a reply to the bail plea, despite the notice issued on July 24. The court then directed all parties to submit written arguments within two weeks. Khalid, who was arrested in September 2020, has challenged the lower court’s decision denying him bail.
Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and several others face charges under UAPA and IPC for allegedly conspiring in the February 2020 Delhi riots. The violence, which erupted during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries.
