The Delhi High Court granted bail to Ankush Jain and Vaibhav Jain, associates of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Satyendar Jain, in connection with a money laundering investigation.
The decision, announced on Tuesday, overturned an earlier ruling by a trial court that had denied bail to the duo.
Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri presided over the bench that made the ruling, which comes on the heels of the Rouse Avenue Court’s earlier decision to grant bail to Satyendar Jain himself on 18 October.
The court had considered his prolonged detention and the delays in the trial process as significant factors in that decision.
The Supreme Court ordered former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain to surrender to jail authorities after it dismissed his regular bail petition on 18 March.
Prior to that, he had been out on interim medical bail for approximately 10 months, initially granted for six weeks in May 2023 and subsequently extended multiple times.
According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Satyendar Jain acquired assets that were disproportionate to his known income during his tenure as a minister from 14 February 2015, to 31 May 2017.
Authorities arrested him on 30 May 2022 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
Investigators launched the money laundering case against Jain after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed an FIR in 2017, which included allegations against Jain, his wife Poonam Jain, and several others.
Additionally, the CBI submitted a charge sheet on 3 December 2018.
In addition to the arrests, the ED had provisionally attached properties worth Rs 4.81 crore belonging to companies controlled by Jain as part of their investigation into the money laundering case, with the attachment occurring on 31 March 2022.
