Delhi is enduring a severe cold wave, with temperatures dropping to 9°C on Sunday. The chill is worsened by brisk winds at 16 km/h, making it feel colder for residents.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for dense fog during the morning hours, advising residents of reduced visibility. Smog and shallow fog are expected to persist into the evening and night, affecting both air quality and visibility.
The thick fog disrupted daily routines, especially for commuters. At Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), flight operations were delayed. Flights without advanced CAT III navigation systems were impacted. The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) assured passengers that takeoffs and landings were still taking place but urged travelers to check with airlines for the latest updates.
At New Delhi Railway Station, dense fog led to delays of numerous trains due to near-zero visibility. Road traffic also slowed as drivers cautiously navigated the thick fog, causing congestion across various parts of the city.
Delhi witnessed an unprecedented weather event on Saturday. Visibility dropped to zero for an entire nine-hour stretch, the longest of the season. The IMD forecasted a maximum of 18°C and a minimum of 10°C for Sunday. Partly cloudy skies are expected in the afternoon and evening.
Looking ahead, a new Western Disturbance is expected between January 10 and 12. It may bring light rain to northwest India, including Delhi. Though it could help improve air quality, it is unlikely to significantly raise temperatures.
As the city battles the cold and fog, authorities urge residents to stay warm and exercise caution while traveling, particularly during early mornings and late evenings when fog and cold reach their peak.
