Delhi Businessman Dies After Helmet Attack Near Connaught Place; Family Seeks Wider Probe

A shocking case of late-night violence has emerged from central Delhi, where a 36-year-old businessman died after allegedly being attacked with helmets near Connaught Place.

The victim’s family has demanded an expanded investigation, expressing serious doubts about the role of a friend who was reportedly present at the scene.

The incident took place near My Bar in E Block, Connaught Place, where Shivam Gupta had gone after attending a party.

According to his family, two youths riding motorcycles assaulted him with helmets, leaving him critically injured on the spot.

Shivam’s father, Anil Kant Gupta, said, “We had no idea where he was. But, after 12, we tried to call him then we found that his phone was switched off. Sub Inspector Suresh Chandra, who picked up the call later, informed us that our son had been found unconscious. Then he informed us that Shivam had been admitted to the hospital.”

“When I reached, I found my son bleeding from his mouth. Then, his friend Pankaj came to the hospital, and we asked him who had told him about this. Then he said that the police had called him. But the police didn’t call him. Shivam’s friend was giving different versions to me and my wife. He didn’t tell me that he was present at the time of the attack and that the accused had beaten Shivam with helmets,” he added.

Shivam fought for his life for 17 days before passing away on January 19 at RML Hospital.

CCTV Footage Raises Further Suspicion

During his treatment, the family reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which allegedly showed two men repeatedly striking him with helmets.

The footage also reportedly captured the attackers acknowledging Shivam’s friend, Pankaj Chaddha, after the assault.

The family has alleged that Pankaj was only a few metres away at the time of the incident. They claim he neither intervened nor informed them accurately about what had happened. They claim he gave inconsistent accounts and concealed key details during the initial days.

Shivam’s mother has also questioned Pankaj’s silence, noting that he has not contacted the family since the incident.

She has urged, “Pankaj Chaddha was not saying anything about his involvement, but when we saw CCTVs, then we saw he was there and didn’t do anything. He is not calling and didn’t come to our home. But, if he was not lying, then he should have come to meet us. I will say that he should be brought in front of us, and we should be allowed to talk to him.”

Doctors initially noted some improvement in Shivam’s condition, but his health deteriorated after he developed a serious brain infection. Despite intensive medical treatment, he could not be saved.

Police have arrested two accused, identified as Osama and Mohammad Areem.

While investigators have described the accused as delivery agents, the family has challenged this claim. They continue to demand a comprehensive probe, suspecting a possible conspiracy behind the fatal assault.
