On Tuesday, the BJP staged a protest outside the Delhi Assembly and strongly criticised AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal for deploying false claims that government school teachers were counting stray dogs.
The protest coincided with the second day of the Winter Session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, which witnessed demonstrations by both the BJP and the AAP on separate issues.
While the BJP targeted the opposition over the dog-counting allegation, the AAP continued its protest against the Rekha Gupta government over air pollution in the national capital.
Earlier in the day, Delhi’s Education Minister addressed a press conference and sharply criticised Kejriwal for what he described as misleading statements.
The minister said the former Chief Minister spread incorrect information by assigning dog-counting duties to government school teachers.
He clarified that the government had issued no order directing teachers to undertake any such exercise and termed Kejriwal’s remarks unfortunate, particularly given his administrative experience.
The minister demanded a public apology, saying such claims distorted facts and undermined public trust.
Accusing the AAP of indulging in what he called ‘shoot-and-scoot’ politics, Education Minister Ashish Sood said the party made unverified claims and then attempted to evade accountability.
He asserted that the government would not tolerate irresponsible behaviour or false statements aimed at misleading citizens.
Following the press briefing, BJP MLAs gathered outside the Assembly complex, holding banners and raising slogans against Kejriwal.
They demanded an apology to teachers and the public for what they called an insulting and baseless allegation.
BJP MLA Harish Khurana accused the AAP and its leadership of insulting teachers and misleading the people of Delhi.
He accused Kejriwal of lying about deploying teachers to count stray dogs and demanded that Kejriwal apologise immediately to the House and the nation.
BJP MLA Ravi Negi echoed similar sentiments, alleging that AAP leaders circulated a false order in the name of the Delhi government. He said the remarks insulted both teachers and the public and added that the protest would continue until an apology was tendered.
BJP MLA Anil Goyal also criticised Kejriwal and AAP leader Sanjay Singh for repeatedly spreading misinformation. He maintained that no such circular had ever been issued and insisted that both leaders apologise publicly.
Meanwhile, police have registered an FIR following a complaint from the Directorate of Education.
Social media users circulated false and misleading claims that Delhi government school teachers counted stray dogs, leading authorities to register the case.
Officials said further investigation into the matter is underway.
The controversy has intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and the AAP during the ongoing Assembly session, with both sides trading sharp accusations.
