A day after she was attacked during a ‘Jan Sunvai’, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday met all seven BJP MPs from the Capital at her Civil Lines residence.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya allegedly slapped the Chief Minister and pulled her hair during a ‘Jan Sunvai’.
He was arrested soon after and placed in five days’ police custody.
Following the attack, Gupta has been accorded Z+ security, with CRPF personnel deployed outside her home.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal shared a photograph from the meeting.
Taking to X, he posted, “Today, I met with the popular Chief Minister of Delhi, Mrs @gupta_rekha ji, along with all my fellow MPs from Delhi and inquired about her well-being. The Chief Minister is completely healthy and, as before, is continuously engaged with dedication in the work of the people of Delhi.”
The MPs later denounced the incident in strong terms.
BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said CM Gupta never prioritised her own safety.
“It’s important to note that this minister never worried about her own safety. She was always concerned about the people. She has done a lot for my Lok Sabha constituency also. We used to advise her to increase her security, but she said she didn’t need to as she works for the people,” he told IANS.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj described Gupta as resilient.
“We visited Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at her residence to ask about her health. I want to assure the people of Delhi that Rekha Gupta is a very brave leader. Her morale remains completely intact. This cowardly and critical attack has not affected her work style in the slightest,” she told IANS.
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari added that her routine of public hearings would not be interrupted.
“She will meet people in the next sitting and resume work from tomorrow. Even today, after meeting people, she has been working. We will wait for the police investigation. Apart from that, our Chief Minister is now fine. Yes, she was injured, but she is in good health,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police have booked the accused under Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132 (obstructing a public servant), and 221 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The Special Cell, along with central agencies, is probing Sakariya’s motives.
Preliminary findings show that he travelled from Rajkot to Delhi by train on Tuesday, stayed at Gujarati Bhavan in Civil Lines, and later visited Gupta’s private residence in Shalimar Bagh, a detail he reportedly shared with a friend over the phone.
Police said Sakariya also has a criminal record, with five cases registered at Bhaktinagar Police Station in Rajkot.
Four ended in acquittal, while one case is pending, with the next hearing scheduled for 9 September.
Gujarat Police have been contacted for more information.
