Officials said Cyclone Biparjoy, which made landfall in Gujrat on Thursday, brought severe rain to several parts of Rajasthan’s Jalore and Barmer districts.
According to a meteorological department official, 60-70 mm of rain fell in a few spots on Thursday night and exceptionally heavy rainfall is expected in both the districts and nearby areas on Friday.
The agency has issued a red alert for Jalore and Barmer. More than 200 mm of rain may fall in regions where the alert has been issued.
Indian Meteorological Department predicted that gusty winds and rains would continue in Kutch at least until the afternoon before the strong storm moves into Rajasthan.
According to the official, the storm will weaken and travel further over Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Pali, and Sirohi where extremely heavy rains are expected, adding that heavy rains may also fall in Rajsamand, Dungarpur, and neighboring districts on Friday and Saturday.
Indian Meteorological Department tweeted, “SCS BIPARJOY weakened into CS at 0830IST of today and lay near lat 23.4N and long 69.5E, about 30km WNW of Bhuj, likely to weaken further into a deep depression over Saurashtra & Kutch around the evening of today”, through its official Twitter handle.
