Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan formally assumed office as the 15th Vice President of India in a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath in a gathering attended by senior political leaders and dignitaries from across the national spectrum.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present to felicitate the newly sworn-in Vice President.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other Union Ministers attended alongside former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Invitations were also extended to senior NDA leaders as well as opposition representatives, reflecting the office’s inclusive stature.
Radhakrishnan’s election followed a clear mandate, securing 452 first-preference votes against opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes. Before his elevation, he served as the Governor of Maharashtra, a position he vacated ahead of assuming the Vice-Presidential office.
Political analysts highlighted his non-confrontational leadership style, rooted in the RSS, as a key factor in his broad acceptance across both government and opposition benches.
Following his oath, Radhakrishnan pledged to uphold the Constitution, maintain the dignity of the Vice-Presidential office, and act as a bridge across political divides.
As Vice President, he also assumes the role of ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, a position that places him at the heart of India’s legislative process.
Radhakrishnan’s tenure begins with an emphasis on stability, inclusivity, and development-oriented governance.
His oath-taking marks the start of a new chapter for the vice-presidential office, setting the tone for his conduct and engagement with India’s political landscape in the years ahead.
