In a unprecedented development on Monday, seventy-nine MPs, spanning both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, were suspended amidst fierce protests over last week’s security breach. Nearly 100 parliamentarians have been suspended in total, representing almost a quarter of all opposition MPs in the final full sitting before next year’s general election.
Among the suspended, notable figures include Jairam Ramesh, KC Venugopal, and Randeep Surjewala from the Rajya Sabha, as well as Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Gaurav Gogoi.
Gaurav Gogoi criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his refusal to address Parliament after the security breach, condemning what he described as “sheer arrogance.” Gogoi raised concerns about the Home Minister’s failure to acknowledge the security lapse.
KV Venugopal accused the government of using Parliament to suppress the voice of the opposition, emphasizing that the House is now focused on suspension rather than discussion.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, witnessing the suspension of nearly a dozen of her MPs, including Sougata Roy, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, and Kalyan Banerjee, argued that the government had “no moral right” to run the House after fully suspending the opposition. She questioned the government’s fear of allowing dissenting voices and highlighted the impact on the representation of people’s concerns in Parliament.
