Congress Leaders Pay Tribute To Rajiv Gandhi On 34th Death Anniversary At Veer Bhumi

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge paid tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Wednesday, marking the 34th anniversary of his death.

The two leaders visited Veer Bhumi in New Delhi to offer their respects to the late Prime Minister.

Rajiv Gandhi served as India’s Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989.

He assumed the role after the assassination of his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, becoming the youngest person to hold the office at the age of 40.

Rajiv Gandhi continued to lead the country until the 1989 general elections and later took up the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

He stepped down in December 1990 and was assassinated six months later in a terrorist attack.

Congress Highlights Rajiv Gandhi’s Legacy

To mark the occasion, the Congress party shared a post on X, stating, “On the death anniversary of late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, LoP Shri
@RahulGandhi paid tribute to him at Veer Bhumi. Rajiv ji’s visionary leadership transformed the foundations of our nation, built on Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. His enduring legacy continues to guide our vision.”

Kharge, in a separate post, described Rajiv Gandhi as ‘a great son of India’ and highlighted his efforts in modernising the country.

“Rajiv Gandhi — a great son of India, inspired hope among millions of Indians. His visionary and courageous interventions were instrumental in preparing India for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century,” he posted on X.

Kharge, however, listed key achievements, noting, “These include lowering the voting age to 18, strengthening Panchayati Raj, spearheading the Telecom and IT revolution, implementing a computerisation program, securing sustained peace accords, launching a universal immunisation program, and introducing a new education policy focused on inclusive learning.”

Kharge concluded by saying, “Our deepest respects to the Former PM, Bharat Ratna, Rajiv Gandhi on his martyrdom day.”

Other Congress Leaders Join In Tribute

A number of other Congress leaders also visited Veer Bhumi to pay their respects.

Speaking to IANS, Congress leader Pawan Khera stated, “The inspiration this family has given us to shed blood for the country is priceless. It feels like the nation was unfortunate to have lost Rajiv Gandhi at such a young age. Had he been with us today, the history of this country would have been very different and much better.”

Veteran Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde, also paying homage, told IANS, “Whenever we come here, we pay our respects at Veer Bhumi. The contributions Rajiv Gandhi made to our country, especially during this transformative era, will never be forgotten by this nation. What he did for our country is something the nation will always remember.”
