Congress Nominates Six Senior Party Leaders To Rajya Sabha

In the early hours of the day on Wednesday, the Oldest political party of India, Congress made public the first list of candidates for the coming Rajya Sabha Biennial Election to be held across different states of the nation. Around the evening, Congress announced to send 6 more veterans to Rajya Sabha, Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain, Ajay Maken, Renuka Chaudhary were made candidates. Congress has announced the names of its Rajya Sabha candidates from Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. The party has nominated Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain, Ajay Maken and GC Chandrashekhar from Karnataka. Renuka Chaudhary and M Anil Kumar Yadav have been made Rajya Sabha candidates from Telangana. Ashok Singh has been made the candidate from Madhya Pradesh.

Sonia Gandhi won’t fight for Lok Sabha elections

The Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, submitted her nomination on Wednesday. She has been elected to the Lok Sabha seat multiple times from Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh. The Rajya Sabha nomination process is underway ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, which are anticipated to take place in April and May of this year. Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister, will retire in April of this year. He was most recently elected from Rajasthan to the Rajya Sabha.

Rajya Sabha Biennial Election

February 15 is the deadline for submitting nomination materials. Members of the Rajya Sabha have a six-year term, and elections are held for 33% of the seats every two years. There are 245 members of the Rajya Sabha at the moment.

Twelve of the 245 members are presidentially nominated, and 233 of the members are representatives of the States and Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, and Puducherry (as of October 31, 2019).

Each state is allotted a specific number of representatives to the Upper House based on its population. Using a single transferable vote, members of the state legislative assemblies select Rajya Sabha members through an indirect election system based on proportional representation.

The Rajya Sabha elections for 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, are set for February 27 by the Election Commission. This date will see voting from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nominations must be submitted by February 15 at the latest. On February 27, the day of the elections, the results will be declared.
