In the early hours of Monday, a devastating cloudburst struck the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, resulting in the tragic death of one individual and causing injuries to three others, as confirmed by officials. The incident occurred around 3:55 am near the village of Kayas in Kullu, where the sudden downpour washed away vehicles and caused a road blockade, impeding rescue efforts, according to the state emergency response centre.
The deceased has been identified as Badal Sharma, a resident of the Chansari village in Kullu. Officials also reported that two of the injured individuals are in serious condition. Local authorities promptly mobilized their resources to address the emergency, deploying machinery to clear the blocked road and facilitate rescue operations.
Prior to the cloudburst, the local Meteorological Office had issued an orange alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of the state on Monday. Sadly, this recent incident brings the total number of rain-related fatalities and road accidents in the state since the onset of the monsoon on June 24 to 118, according to the state emergency response centre. Moreover, the state has incurred significant losses amounting to Rs 4,415 crore.
The authorities continue to assess the situation and provide necessary assistance to the affected areas, as they work towards mitigating the impact of the monsoon and ensuring the safety of the residents.
