Chilean President Gabriel Boric Meets S Jaishankar; Pays Tribute To Mahatma Gandhi

Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font commenced his state visit to India on Monday. This visit reaffirms the commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Boric at the beginning of his visit, expressing optimism about strengthening long-standing cooperation.

Taking to X, Jaishankar further posted, “Pleased to call on President @GabrielBoric of Chile at the start of his State Visit to India. Appreciate his commitment for deepening our long-standing cooperation. Confident that his talks with PM @narendramodi today will foster new partnerships and greater engagement.”

Upon his arrival in New Delhi, Boric paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.

“President @GabrielBoric of Chile pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, honouring his lasting message of peace & non-violence. A moment of reflection on the enduring legacy of the Mahatma & shared values that unite India and Chile,” the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal further posted on X.

Boric received a ceremonial welcome and a Guard of Honor at Rashtrapati Bhavan after landing in India.

Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita welcomed him at the airport.

Jaiswal confirmed his arrival, posting, “Bienvenido, President @GabrielBoric! President @GabrielBoric of Chile landed in New Delhi on his first State Visit to 🇮🇳. Accorded a ceremonial welcome & Guard of Honour. Warmly received by MoS @PmargheritaBJP at the airport.”

Invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Boric’s visit, from 1-5 April, is however focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, innovation, and cultural exchanges.

He is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers, lawmakers, business leaders, and cultural representatives.

Sharing his thoughts on X, Boric further emphasized India’s global economic stature. He highlighted opportunities for collaboration in key sectors such as agribusiness, technology, and creative industries.

His delegation includes experts from various fields working to foster bilateral engagement.

During his visit, Boric will engage in discussions with Indian leaders. Notably, he will:

  • Attend a luncheon with PM Modi, and
  • Be honored at a banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu

He will also travel to Agra, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to meet political figures, industry leaders, and startup innovators, aiming to explore investment and technological partnerships.

India and Chile share a strong diplomatic relationship, with Chile being the only Latin American country to send a special envoy for India’s Independence Day celebrations in 1947.

Both nations continue to collaborate on global platforms, with Chile supporting India’s bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council since 2003.
