Chikungunya Cases Rising In Kerala: Are You At Risk This Monsoon?

Kerala has reported a rise in chikungunya cases during the monsoon, recording 105 confirmed and 62 probable infections as of August 4, with most cases emerging from Thiruvananthapuram.

Health experts attribute the increase to the rapid breeding of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes during the rainy season.

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, which also spread dengue and Zika.

The illness usually begins with a high fever, followed by severe joint pain that can persist for weeks or even months. Other common symptoms include headache, body aches, fatigue, rash and joint swelling.

Although chikungunya is rarely fatal, the intense joint pain can significantly disrupt daily life and, in some cases, lead to prolonged disability.

The rise in infections has prompted health authorities to strengthen surveillance, intensify mosquito-control measures and raise public awareness about preventive steps.

There is currently no specific antiviral treatment for chikungunya. Most patients recover with adequate rest, proper hydration and medicines to relieve fever and pain.

Doctors advise anyone experiencing a high fever accompanied by severe joint pain, particularly in affected areas, to seek medical attention promptly.

Preventing mosquito bites remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of infection.

Health experts recommend wearing long-sleeved clothing, applying mosquito repellents, using mosquito nets and installing proper screens on windows and doors. They also urge people to remove stagnant water from coolers, flower pots, water storage containers and other household items, as these serve as breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.
