The Indian government has acknowledged that several of its citizens have become embroiled in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, stating that efforts are underway to facilitate their safe return. Reports emerged recently suggesting that a group of Indians had been misled into military service in Russia. These individuals were allegedly promised non-combat roles but were instead enlisted in the Russian army, having been provided with inaccurate translations of documents and undergoing military training under pretenses.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, addressed the situation, confirming that several Indian nationals had indeed signed up for support positions with the Russian military. The Indian Embassy has been actively engaging with Russian authorities to expedite their release. Jaiswal urged all Indian citizens to exercise caution and refrain from involvement in the conflict.
The family of one individual, Sufiyan from Hyderabad, along with AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, have appealed to the government for assistance in securing the safe evacuation of these trapped citizens and taking action against those responsible for the deception. Imran, Sufiyan’s brother, exposed the fraudulent tactics employed by agents linked to Faisal Khan, who operates a YouTube channel called ‘Baba Vlogs’. These agents allegedly promised support roles but instead facilitated enlistment in the Russian military.
With reports indicating that nine Indian men are currently within Ukrainian borders, facing danger and injury, distressed families are pleading for government intervention. Owaisi has formally written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging swift action to repatriate the affected Indians.
