As the nation prepares to mark its 77th Republic Day, the Government of India has announced the names of at least 45 individuals who will be conferred with the prestigious Padma Awards under the special category of ‘Unsung Heroes.’
The recognition shines a spotlight on those who have worked tirelessly, often away from public attention, in the service of the nation.
Continuing with the principle of celebrating Ordinary Indians making Extraordinary Contributions, this year’s Padma Awards acknowledge a diverse group of individuals drawn from across the length and breadth of the country.
These awardees represent a wide spectrum of professions, regions, and social backgrounds, united by a shared commitment to service and social good.
Many of the selected honourees have overcome significant personal hardships and tragedies. Despite these challenges, they not only excelled in their chosen fields but went on to dedicate their lives to the welfare of society at large.
Several belong to marginalised Backwards and Dalit communities, primitive tribes, and hail from remote and difficult terrains where access to resources remains limited.
The ‘Unsung Heroes’ category recognises individuals who have devoted decades to serving Divyangjan, women, children, Dalits and tribal communities, working in crucial areas such as healthcare, education, livelihoods, sanitation, sustainability, and social inclusion.
Among the awardees are doctors addressing local health challenges like haemophilia, a neonatologist who established India’s first human milk bank, and grassroots workers preserving India’s indigenous heritage.
Others have worked relentlessly to promote national integration in border states, nurture tribal languages and indigenous martial arts, revive dying arts and traditional weaves, protect the nation’s ecological wealth, and champion the cause of swachhta.
Together, this group of Padma Awardees embodies the spirit of everyday Indians who quietly go about their work with dedication and compassion, serving Bharat Mata without seeking recognition.
Their stories underscore the profound impact of silent service and reaffirm the Padma Awards’ role in honouring those who truly strengthen the nation from the ground up.
