The Election Commission of India on Sunday strongly defended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls while unveiling the election schedule for four states and one Union Territory.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said the revision drive aimed to maintain accurate and reliable voter lists across the country.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, he stressed that transparent and updated electoral rolls form the foundation of free and fair democratic elections.
He explained that the exercise ensured the inclusion of every eligible voter while removing individuals who did not meet the eligibility criteria.
Gyanesh Kumar addressed the press conference along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
He stated that the upcoming elections across the four states and the Union Territory represent the country’s varied geographical and cultural identity.
The CEC described elections as a reflection of India’s unity in diversity and encouraged citizens to participate actively in the democratic process.
He also urged first-time voters, “You are about to step into one of the most important roles of life. I urge you to participate in democratic exercise and cast your vote.”
Referring to elections as a festival of democracy, he repeated the phrase “Chunaav ka parv, hum sabka garv”.
The Election Commission confirmed that Assembly elections will be conducted in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The announcement followed a political rally addressed by Narendra Modi in Kolkata a day earlier.
During the rally, the Prime Minister accused the All India Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal of attempting to shield alleged infiltrators during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress submitted a notice seeking the impeachment of the CEC in Parliament, alleging bias by the Election Commission during the voter list revision process.
