The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made significant strides in its probe into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
Recent findings indicate a potentially critical link to renovation activities near the crime scene.
On 13 August, the day after the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take over the investigation from Kolkata Police, state Public Works Department (PWD) personnel attempted to start renovation work in a room adjacent to the seminar hall where the authorities discovered the victim’s body on 9 August.
The hospital’s student community halted the renovation due to protests.
Investigators obtained a document showing that someone issued renovation instructions on 10 August, the day after the body’s recovery.
The document allegedly points to a former senior doctor at the hospital, who was also an administrator and a close associate of the controversial former Principal Sandip Ghosh, as the source of these instructions.
The CBI is now exploring whether the former doctor issued the renovation orders independently or if external advice influenced them.
In addition, officials are scrutinizing the decision to cremate the victim’s body swiftly rather than preserving it for a potential second post-mortem.
Such a second examination could have provided additional insights into the case.
On Thursday afternoon, CBI agents visited the hospital to interrogate staff and officials responsible for the cremation arrangements.
They are questioning why the body was not retained at the morgue for further investigation and why necessary procedures were not followed, particularly when the family might have requested a second post-mortem.
The investigation is ongoing, with CBI officials aiming to unravel the full extent of the connections and decisions made surrounding this tragic case.
