CBI Investigates Suspended Junior Doctor’s Movements During R.G. Kar Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the movements of Suspended Junior Doctor Avik Dey, during the night of August 8, when the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital occurred. The investigation is also looking into Dey’s activities on the following day.

Dey, formerly a resident medical officer in the Radiodiagnosis Department at Burdwan Medical College, was suspended by the West Bengal Medical Council and the state health department. He is currently enrolled in a postgraduate surgery program at S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital in South Kolkata.

Sources indicate that Dey had close ties to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar, who is currently in custody in connection with the case. Recently, a letter from the dean of S.S.K.M. to the state health department raised concerns about Dey’s behavior and highlighted that he had been absent from duty since August 8.

In the letter, the dean noted that Dey had not completed his registration process as a postgraduate trainee, nor had he submitted a summary of his proposed research subject. This has raised further questions about his conduct during his enrollment.

Both Dey and another suspended junior doctor, Birupaksha Biswas—previously a senior resident doctor in the Pathology Department at Burdwan Medical College—were subjected to extensive questioning by CBI officials on September 21 and 22. Like Dey, Biswas is also reported to have connections with Ghosh and has faced suspension from the West Bengal Medical Council.

Allegations against both doctors suggest that they used their relationships with Ghosh and Trinamool Congress leaders to intimidate and harass fellow junior doctors.

The body of the victim was discovered under suspicious circumstances in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar Medical College on the morning of August 9.
