The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had called the CA, Butchibabu Gorantla, to Delhi for questioning in connection with the excise policy case. He was arrested on Tuesday evening as he was non-cooperative and his responses were found to be evasive.
A senior CBI official said that he was arrested for his alleged role in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy and thereby causing wrongful gain to the Hyderabad-based wholesale and retail licensees and their beneficial owners under the Delhi excise policy for the year 2021-22.
The accused is believed to be a former aide of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter MLC Kavitha, whose name had already featured in the case.
Kavitha was questioned by the CBI in connection with the policy and denied all allegations of receiving kickbacks through the policy.
The Enforcement Department had alleged She was part of the South Cartel that benefited from kickbacks in the liquor policy case.
According to reports, Gorantla was allegedly involved with the formulation and implementation of the Delhi excise policy.
His role in the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy caused wrongful gain to Hyderabad-based wholesale and retail licensees and their beneficial owners, the CBI alleged.
In the coming days, the CBI can issue summons to people having political backgrounds as the south group is full of political connections.
This is not the first time that the CA’s name has come up in the case. In 2022, his residence in Aravind Nagar, Domalguda was raided by the Enforcement Directorate as he served as the personal auditor of many eminent persons including Kavitha.
