BSF Jawan Purnam Shaw Returns Home After Nearly Three Weeks In Pakistani Captivity

In a major relief for India’s security forces, the Pakistan Rangers on Wednesday released BSF jawan Purnam Shaw, held in captivity for nearly three weeks after inadvertently crossing the international border in Punjab’s Ferozepur district.

The incident occurred on 23 April, a day after the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians.

Shaw, while on operational duty, mistakenly crossed into Pakistani territory and subsequently detained by the Pakistan Rangers.

The Border Security Force (BSF) confirmed the return in an official statement, stating, “Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw has been taken back from Pakistan by BSF at Attari-Wagha border today at 1030 hrs.”

“Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw had inadvertently crossed over to Pakistan territory, while on operational duty in the area of Ferozepur sector on 23rd April 2025 around 1150 hrs and detained by Pak Rangers,” the statement added.

His return followed established protocol, and authorities will now conduct medical examinations to assess his condition and determine if he faced mistreatment while in custody.

This development comes in the wake of the 10 May ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan.

The agreement came after heightened tensions, including India’s Operation Sindoor, which struck terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on 7 May.

Earlier, Shaw’s wife, Rajni, had travelled to Ferozepur to appeal for his safe return.

During her visit, senior BSF officials assured her that they were making every possible effort to secure his release.
