BRICS Summit Strengthens India’s Independent Global Power Credentials After New Delhi Declaration

India’s standing as an independent global power gained fresh diplomatic attention after the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The New Delhi Declaration strongly condemned the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terrorist attack that killed 26 people.

It reaffirmed BRICS’ commitment to countering terrorism, including cross-border movement, terror financing and safe havens. The declaration rejected double standards in counter-terrorism efforts.

An analysis published by Athens-based Directus described the development as significant for India. It noted that Pakistan was not explicitly named in the declaration.

However, it said the terminology accepted by diverse BRICS members carried political significance for New Delhi.

The report said India had consistently argued that terrorism requires action against the wider ecosystem supporting it. That includes weapons, training, finance, communications, recruitment networks and operational safe havens.

Directus stated that the declaration gave this approach greater multilateral recognition. It linked the outcome to India’s wider foreign policy, which maintains engagement with countries holding differing geopolitical positions.

India remains part of the Quad while retaining a leading role in BRICS. It maintains its longstanding relationship with Russia while expanding ties with the United States.

New Delhi has deepened engagement with Gulf nations and maintained relations with Israel. It continues dialogue with China despite significant differences.

The report said BRICS demonstrated the value of India’s strategic autonomy. It argued that India placed its security concerns before a diverse grouping and secured consensus on terrorism.

Directus concluded that the outcome strengthens India’s credibility as an independent global power rather than an extension of any geopolitical bloc.
