BRICS Summit 2026: PM Modi Meets Vladimir Putin In New Delhi Ahead Of Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in New Delhi on Friday ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.

The leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation across key sectors. They discussed the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region.

Both leaders shared a warm hug before their meeting. It marked their second interaction this year after meeting on the sidelines of the 26th SCO Summit in Bishkek on August 31.

PM Modi gifted Putin the Russian translation of the Thirukkural, written by Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. The classic text contains extensive writings on agriculture and farmers.

The discussions covered political, economic, defence, energy, space, mobility and people-to-people ties.

The leaders are expected to explore wider industrial cooperation in railways, tunnelling and steel value chains. They will further examine new business-to-business opportunities and greater access to the Russian market.

The agenda includes stronger civil nuclear cooperation, covering fuel-cycle and life-cycle support.

Both sides will discuss critical minerals, fertiliser cooperation and strategic joint ventures. They are expected to explore ways to increase opportunities for skilled Indian workers in Russia.

Before their Bishkek meeting, Prime Minister Modi and Putin met in New Delhi for the 23rd Annual Summit in December 2025. At Bishkek, they reviewed the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic and Cultural matters, held in Moscow on August 24.

The leaders discussed BRICS under India’s 2026 chairship and regional issues affecting maritime trade and Indian seafarers.

PM Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward.

The PMO said both leaders agreed to strengthen the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’, which has remained resilient amid geopolitical uncertainties.
