BRICS Summit 2026: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian Arrives In New Delhi

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit. Union Minister of State Shantanu Thakur received him warmly at the airport.

The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed Pezeshkian and highlighted the longstanding relationship between India and Iran.

Taking to X, Randhir Jaiswal posted, “India and Iran share civilizational ties, marked by vibrant cultural and people-to-people bonds. As BRICS partners, the two countries are working to contribute to shared progress and prosperity.”

India holds the BRICS chair in 2026. It will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. The gathering will bring together BRICS leaders, partner nations and outreach invitees.

BRICS includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Its partner countries include Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei earlier described India-Iran ties as a ‘long-standing, historic and civilisational relationship’. He said Tehran would use the summit to discuss areas of mutual interest with New Delhi.

“India is a member of both the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS. It is one of the countries with which we have good relations in various areas, particularly trade and economic cooperation,” Mehr quoted Baqaei as saying.

“Various issues are usually discussed during consultations between Iran and India, including the Chabahar Port, which is important to both countries,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said BRICS leaders would hold positive and meaningful discussions in New Delhi with global welfare in mind.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “In the coming days, leaders from around the world will gather for the BRICS Summit. There is full confidence that the conference will feature positive and meaningful discussions on various issues, with aspirations for global welfare.”

Last month, PM Modi and Pezeshkian met during the SCO Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. They reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation.

The leaders reviewed developments in West Asia.

PM Modi reiterated India’s position that all issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, according to the MEA.
