Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the results of Gujarat’s local body elections highlight strong voter support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as trends indicated the party is establishing a decisive lead across municipal corporations, municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats.
Reacting to the early results, the Prime Minister remarked, “The bond between Gujarat and the BJP gets even stronger.”
PM Modi expressed gratitude to voters for delivering what he termed a comprehensive mandate across different levels of governance, adding that the electorate supported ‘politics of good governance’ and appreciated the performance of the state government.
“The electorate had blessed the hard work of the BJP over the years, and the party would continue working to take Gujarat to newer heights of progress,” he asserted.
The Prime Minister also recognised the contribution of party workers, stating, “BJP workers had consistently worked at the grassroots to address public issues, which had contributed to the party being a preferred choice in the state”.
The results are based on vote counting from elections held on April 26. These covered 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats. The State Election Commission conducted the polls.
Counting began earlier in the day at designated centres amid tight security, with official confirmations expected after all rounds conclude.
As per trends available by the evening, the BJP secured a commanding position across all tiers.
In taluka panchayats, the party won 3,469 seats, while the Congress secured 944 and others won 457 seats. In district panchayats, the BJP secured 852 seats, compared to 128 for the Congress and 55 for others.
The BJP also reportedly gained control of 33 out of 34 district panchayats. In municipalities, it won 1,965 seats, while the Congress secured 458 and others 177.
In municipal corporations, the BJP secured 868 seats, while the Congress won 72 and others 12, with the party leading in 14 out of 15 corporations.
The BJP registered strong performances in several municipalities in the Surat district.
In Kadodara, it secured 25 of 28 seats. In Bardoli, it won 32 of 36, including two unopposed. Additionally, in Tarsadi, it secured 24 of 28, including 13 unopposed. In Mandvi, it won 22 of 24, including one unopposed.
These elections are considered a key indicator of grassroots political strength in Gujarat. Elected representatives in local bodies play a crucial role in civic administration and development.
Counting is still underway at various centres, and the State Election Commission will announce the final results after the process concludes.
