The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for alleging ‘election chori’ during the voter list revision in Bihar and for threatening Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a public rally.
BJP spokespersons accused the Congress MP of ‘demeaning’ the Election Commission (EC) with ‘baseless and outlandish’ claims. They said his comments on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar were misleading and aimed at creating disorder.
Rahul Gandhi posted on X, claiming the EC was ‘caught red-handed stealing votes’ in Bihar during the SIR drive. He questioned whether the poll panel had turned into the BJP’s ‘election chori branch’.
BJP spokesperson Tarun Chugh dismissed the allegations, saying, “Congress has relaunched him many times, but he keeps failing. Now he spreads negativity and makes reckless statements.”
UP minister Dinesh Pratap Singh also criticised Gandhi, saying, “Rahul should respect democratic institutions. If illegal migrants, including Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, are being identified, what is wrong with that?”
The EC has clarified that the revision aims to remove ineligible voters and duplicates while retaining eligible names.
The BJP also objected to Gandhi’s remark predicting prison for Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Party spokesperson Zafar Islam said, “Rahul Gandhi has scant regard for law. He himself is on bail but threatens an elected CM.”
“This is like a thief talking about guarding the post. The entire Gandhi family is on bail,” he added.
Chugh called Gandhi’s statements ‘absurd’, accusing him of ignoring controversies involving his own party. Singh said the threat reflected Congress’s ‘Emergency mindset’.
BJP reiterated that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks were ‘irresponsible’ and accused him of ‘spreading anarchy’.
