Sources confirmed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will retain control over the prestigious post of Speaker in the upcoming 18th Lok Sabha.
Speculation had been rife regarding potential contenders from other political allies within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Addressing reports that suggested demands from BJP’s allies for the Speaker’s role, a senior party leader clarified that internal deliberations within the BJP would precede any discussions with NDA partners to ensure consensus.
In the previous terms under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Sumitra Mahajan and Om Birla, both BJP Members of Parliament, served as the Lok Sabha Speaker.
Despite the BJP’s diminished majority compared to earlier terms, there were rumors of contenders from parties like the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United) eyeing the position.
Sources indicated that deliberations over the next Speaker will proceed after Prime Minister Modi’s return from Italy. The government will consider any feedback or suggestions from NDA allies, potentially leading to a new approach.
During the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, commencing on 24 June, the BJP plans to engage with opposition parties to secure a unanimous election of the Speaker.
Meanwhile, agreement from the opposition would negate the need for an election.
However, if the opposition presents a candidate, a vote may occur on 26 June, with the new Speaker assuming office the same day.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced the commencement dates for both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha sessions, emphasizing the agenda including the oath-taking of new Members and the election of the Speaker.
The upcoming session is anticipated to set the tone for legislative business under the new government, navigating expectations and challenges in the parliamentary landscape.
