New Delhi: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) responded to criticism from the opposition about the death of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, warning against divisive tactics.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “Places like Ghazipur, Mau, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, and Balia, which used to be known for their connections with criminals, have changed. We need to be cautious. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to empower everyone have countered attempts to divide people based on religion.”
He also mentioned that these areas were once strongholds of the Congress party. On the other hand, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav demanded an investigation into Ansari’s death by a Supreme Court judge.
Mukhtar Ansari, a former MLA from Uttar Pradesh who was convicted of murder, passed away on Thursday due to a heart attack at Banda Medical College. His family claimed that he was poisoned slowly.
Akhilesh Yadav asserted, “It is the government’s responsibility to protect everyone, even prisoners, in all situations.” He added, “Any suspicious deaths, like in police custody, during a fight in jail, or while being taken to a hospital, should be investigated by a Supreme Court judge.”
Similarly, BSP president Mayawati also asked for a thorough investigation into Ansari’s death.
She said, “His family’s concerns are serious and need to be looked into.”
Mukhtar Ansari’s son, Umar Ansari, claimed that his father was given poison on March 19, and his lawyers had informed the court. “We only found out about his death through the media. We want a proper investigation. We trust the legal system,” he said.
After Mukhtar Ansari’s death, the Uttar Pradesh government imposed strict orders in Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi, areas where he had influence.
