The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on the verge of scripting a historic victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
Early trends from the Election Commission of India show the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leading in more than 200 constituencies. This surge puts the alliance in commanding control of the state.
The BJP alone is leading in 94 seats, signalling its strongest performance in Bihar in 45 years.
The party has steadily expanded its footprint, turning this election into a defining moment in its political rise in the state.
The numbers underline a dramatic shift when compared with previous elections.
In 2010, the NDA, powered by the JD(U)-BJP alliance, swept 206 seats, with JD(U) winning 115 and BJP 91. But fortunes reversed in 2015.
The Mahagathbandhan, led by Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, and the Congress, pushed the BJP down to 53 seats.
This alliance handed the BJP one of its biggest setbacks.
The 2020 contest was even tighter. The NDA barely crossed the majority line with 125 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan grabbed 110.
The RJD became the single largest party with 75 seats, followed by the BJP with 74. The JD(U) slumped to 43, signalling voter frustration and a fragmented mandate.
The 2025 trends now point to a sweeping reversal. The BJP has not only regained lost territory but also surged far ahead of the RJD and even its long-time ally JD(U).
The party’s performance signals a deep reordering of Bihar’s political structure.
Historically, the BJP won 37 seats in 2005, 67 in 2000, 41 in 1995, 39 in 1990, 16 in 1985, and 21 in 1980. None of these numbers come close to the 2025 surge.
If these leads hold through final counting, the BJP will register its most decisive standalone victory in Bihar’s electoral history.
The result will reshape the power balance within the NDA, strengthen the BJP’s influence over governance, and open an entirely new political chapter in the state.
Bihar appears to be witnessing a generational shift in voter preference and the BJP stands at the centre of this sweeping transformation.
