State party chief Sunil Jakhar declared on Tuesday that the BJP would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Punjab independently. Jakhar cited public opinion and input from party members within the state as factors influencing this decision. He also acknowledged the BJP’s notable achievements under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The absence of an alliance between the BJP and Akali Dal in Punjab has been confirmed after discussions on the matter failed to yield results. Consequently, the BJP will proceed with independent participation in the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. Earlier, speculation had arisen regarding a potential collaboration between the BJP and Akali Dal, hinting at joint participation in the elections.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab, SAD and BJP, allies in the NDA, fell short of their objectives. Despite a pro-Modi wave in other regions, the Congress secured eight seats, defying expectations. SAD terminated its alliance with the BJP in September 2020 due to the contentious farm laws, which triggered widespread protests.
Recent protests by Punjab farmers have reignited demands for legal assurances on minimum support prices. SAD’s core committee convened on March 22 to finalize its election strategy, deliberating on both state and national political landscapes. Daljit Singh Cheema of SAD stressed the importance of incorporating national developments into their strategic discussions.
