Eight labourers from Uttar Pradesh were killed and several others injured after a pickup vehicle carrying them collided with a dumper in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district early Tuesday.

The accident occurred around 1 AM near Chhimaka village in the Gohad area. According to preliminary findings, the speeding pickup lost control while trying to avoid a herd of cows and collided with an oncoming dumper.

The labourers, all from Lakhimpur Kheri, had travelled to the Gwalior region for paddy transplantation work and were returning home when the accident occurred.

After receiving information, police reached the spot and, with help from local residents, rescued those trapped inside the badly damaged vehicle.

Doctors at Gohad Hospital declared eight labourers dead after police took the injured there. They referred those seriously injured to Gwalior for further treatment.

Police have begun the process of identifying the deceased and informing their families.

Authorities are arranging to transport the victims’ remains to their home district.

The Chief Minister directed officials to coordinate with the Madhya Pradesh government to ensure the safe transportation of the victims’ remains and proper treatment for those injured.
