Belgian PM Bart De Wever Arrives In India For Three-Day Visit; PM Modi Talks On Agenda

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever reached New Delhi on Thursday for a three-day official visit, his first trip to India since taking charge as Prime Minister in February last year. Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken is accompanying him on the visit.

Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth received De Wever after his arrival in the national capital.

De Wever will likely meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later on Thursday for talks covering India-Belgium relations and regional and global issues of shared interest.

The discussions will likely focus on expanding cooperation in trade and investment, defence, technology, renewable energy and connectivity.

The Belgian Prime Minister will deliver a keynote address at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) business event in the context of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.

After completing his engagements in New Delhi, De Wever will travel to Mumbai. He will likely meet stakeholders from the diamond industry as well as the ports and logistics sectors.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit offers an opportunity to strengthen the ‘close and multifaceted’ partnership between India and Belgium while advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

India and Belgium established diplomatic relations in September 1947. The bilateral relationship has developed around shared values such as the rule of law, federalism and pluralism.

Belgium supports India’s bid for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council.
