It seems that British Broadcasting Council is again in a trouble in India. Earlier, the company was facing trouble because of the documentary that was made on the Gujarat Riots. Now, the Income Tax Department is taking actions against BBC for tax evasion. BBC has also acknowledged the material evidences put forward by the Income Tax department but on in an informal manner. The formal procedures are still not done.
BBC has written an email to the department of Taxes about showing less income to the government which is no less than tax evasion. This action calls for a penalty and recovery from the prestigious organisation. BBC will have to follow up the procedures to file the returns all over again. In addition to this, they will have to pay the penalties and interests all over again. According to the sources, these numbers run across the value of crores.
This email also does not hold much of legal importance as a senior CBDT official said that, “The email has no legal sanctity. The BBC needs to file a revised return for it to be taken seriously,” said a senior CBDT official.”

The officials of India state that law of the nation is same for one and all. No dispensation is there either for a media company or a foreign entity. “BBC must act as per the stated procedure or face the law. The Department will continue to take action against it until the matter is taken to the logical conclusion,” the official said.
Also, BBC somehow tried to create a scenario that Indian government is trying to trap the media company because of the Gujarat Riots Controversy. Finally, they have themselves accepted the allegations are true.
The survey for the alleged tax evasion was conducted in the February month, to which the British company said that they were gully cooperating.
