On Monday, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her position.
The General announced that an interim government will soon take over the country’s administration.
Addressing the nation in a televised statement, General Waker-Uz-Zaman reassured citizens of the military’s commitment to restoring peace and stability.
He emphasized the army’s role in maintaining order during this transitional period and announced plans to meet with President Mohammed Shahabuddin shortly.
The Prime Minister’s resignation follows intense civil unrest, with Sheikh Hasina reportedly fleeing to a safer location after demonstrators breached Gonobhaban, her official residence in Dhaka.
The unrest escalated significantly on Sunday, resulting in violent clashes between protesters and police.
Reports indicate that the latest round of violence has killed over 100 people and injured more than 1,000.
According to The Daily Star, the recent surge in fatalities has pushed the death toll in the anti-government protests to over 300 in just three weeks, marking one of the bloodiest periods in Bangladesh’s civil history.
The unrest has largely been driven by student-led demonstrations opposing a controversial government policy that allocated 30 percent of government jobs to the relatives of 1971 freedom fighters.
The policy, a legacy of Bangladesh’s struggle for independence from Pakistan, sparked widespread outrage among students.
Although the Supreme Court reduced the reservation to 5 percent, protests resumed when the government failed to meet demands for the release of student leaders and, ultimately, Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
The formation of an interim government and the ongoing negotiations aim to address the political crisis and restore stability in Bangladesh, amid hopes for a resolution to the deepening national turmoil.
