A balcony collapsed during the Mahaviri procession in Chhapra district’s Isuapur block, Bihar, injuring at least 10 people in a late-night incident on Tuesday.
The mishap occurred around 11:30 PM as a crowd gathered to watch an orchestra performance associated with the annual religious event.
Dr. Kumar Aashish, Superintendent of Police (SP) for Saran district, reported that authorities immediately took the injured to the Isuapur Community Health Centre, where they received preliminary treatment for minor injuries and scratches before being discharged.
Aashish told IANS, “As soon as we learnt about the incident, we sent additional forces to the place to rescue the people.”
The accident unfolded when a large group of people crowded onto the balcony of an old building to get a better view of the performances.
The structure, unable to bear the weight, collapsed, sending the people on the balcony tumbling onto those gathered below.
Fortunately, the presence of the crowd on the ground helped cushion the fall, preventing more severe injuries.
Eyewitnesses noted that the debris from the collapse did not strike those standing below, averting a potential tragedy.
Police personnel, who were already on duty for the event, quickly initiated rescue efforts following the incident.
The Mahaviri Mela procession is a significant annual religious event in Bihar, drawing large crowds across various districts.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of participants and spectators at such events, highlighting the need for stricter safety measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
