Delhi’s Minister Atishi expressed her satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh in the Delhi excise policy case, terming it as “Satyamev Jayate” on a popular social media platform.
In a subsequent press conference, Atishi welcomed the release of the senior leader, emphasizing the triumph of truth. She highlighted the lack of satisfactory responses from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding the money trail and the basis of the case against Singh, Manish Sisodia, and Arvind Kejriwal, which relied solely on the statements of approvers.
Sanjay Singh, who had been arrested last October in connection with the case, was granted bail by a bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta, and P B Varale. The ED did not object to Singh’s bail, and the Supreme Court left the terms and conditions of his release to be determined by the trial court.
The bail granted to Sanjay Singh brings relief to the Aam Aadmi Party, which has been grappling with a significant crisis following the arrest of Delhi’s Chief Minister and party convenor, Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal remains in judicial custody until April 15.
Sanjay Singh’s arrest last October came after raids at his residence by the Enforcement Directorate, as part of their money laundering probe into the excise policy case. The agency alleged that Singh played a pivotal role in formulating and implementing the now-defunct policy, which purportedly favored certain liquor manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers.
According to an ED chargesheet filed against AAP leader Manish Sisodia in May of the previous year, a restaurateur named Dinesh Arora had close ties with both Singh and the former Delhi Deputy CM. Arora, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in July, was named by the ED as a crucial figure in the case. He claimed to have been introduced to Singh through whom he later met Sisodia during a gathering at his restaurant, Unplugged Courtyard. Arora alleged that Singh had contacted him in 2020, seeking funds for the assembly elections and advising him to seek financial support from other restaurant owners.
