Arunachal Floods: Amit Shah Reviews Situation With CM Pema Khandu

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to him to review the flood situation in the state, which has been battered by incessant monsoon rains, floods and landslides over the past week.

In social media posts, Khandu said he thanked Shah for calling to assess the situation. He said he briefed the Home Minister on the evolving conditions and the ongoing relief, rescue and rehabilitation efforts, while appreciating his prompt concern and commitment towards the welfare of the people.

Floods have affected thousands of people across 12 of Arunachal Pradesh’s 28 districts. According to disaster management officials, rescuers recovered the body of 48-year-old Saurabh Kumar Kharwar on Sunday, raising the death toll in the worst-hit Keyi Panyor district to three. Two other people, including a minor, remain missing.

Flash floods have damaged around 20 houses and residential structures in the Yazali circle, while floods and landslides have disrupted roads, bridges and surface connectivity across several districts.

Authorities said rescue and relief operations are continuing as damage assessments are underway.

Chief Minister Khandu held a virtual review meeting with Deputy Commissioners of the affected districts, along with the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and senior officials, to assess rescue operations, road restoration, medical response and the supply of essential commodities.

Citing the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Khandu warned that widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and isolated heavy to very heavy rain are likely to continue until July 1, urging residents to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.

The Border Roads Organisation restored the crucial Kimin-Potin road within 36 hours after landslides, while an Indian Air Force helicopter airlifted relief materials and National Disaster Response Force personnel to the flood-hit Keyi Panyor district.
