Anita Anand Signals Fresh Momentum In India-Canada Ties; PM Modi, Jaishankar Discuss Trade And Security

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Wednesday said Canada and India were looking to strengthen economic ties and expand cooperation in trade, investment and security, pointing to renewed momentum in bilateral relations at a time of global uncertainty.

In a post on X, Anand said her visit to New Delhi aimed to advance shared priorities and explore new areas of cooperation. She further highlighted the opportunities for closer economic engagement in an article published by The Times of India.

Earlier on Wednesday, Anita Anand met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

PM Modi said the two sides had held productive discussions on trade, technology, security, energy, education and people-to-people exchanges. He reiterated India’s commitment to building a constructive and forward-looking strategic partnership with Canada that delivers tangible benefits to people in both countries.

The External Affairs Minister said he and Anita Anand reviewed progress in trade and investment, education, energy, defence and people-to-people exchanges.

The two Ministers exchanged views on key regional and global developments.

Jaishankar added that sustained engagement between the two governments and industries was helping advance the strategic partnership.

Trade, Investment and Security on Agenda

Anita Anand said nearly 80 years of diplomatic relations, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit and the ongoing Team Canada Trade Mission had strengthened bilateral engagement. She further said Canada looked forward to welcoming PM Modi in December.

The Canadian Minister’s October 13-16 visit to India and the UAE focuses on trade, energy, security and defence.

The Ministry of External Affairs said this was her third visit to India since June 2025.

India and Canada have been working to rebuild ties following diplomatic tensions in 2023 and 2024.

Bilateral trade reached $30.4 billion in 2025, including $11 billion in goods.

Anita Anand joined former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at a Bloomberg New Economy Forum panel in New Delhi, where Jaishankar highlighted cooperation among middle powers.
