Amit Shah Turns 62: From Grassroots Organiser To India’s Home Minister

Union Home Minister Amit Shah turned 62 on Thursday, October 22, marking a political journey that has taken him from grassroots organisation to one of the most influential positions in the country.

A close associate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah has played a significant role in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s organisational expansion and the government’s major policy decisions.

Early Life and Political Beginnings

Born in Mumbai on October 22, 1964, Shah grew up in Gujarat and studied biochemistry at Gujarat University. His political journey began during his teenage years when he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and became associated with its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Shah joined the BJP in 1987 and received an organisational assignment in Ahmedabad in 1989. His early years in politics involved building the party’s grassroots network and working on election campaigns. These responsibilities helped establish his reputation as an organisational strategist within the party.

Rise Through Gujarat Politics

Shah entered electoral politics in 1997, winning the Gujarat Assembly election from Sarkhej. He subsequently represented Naranpura and served as a minister in the Gujarat government from 2002, handling several portfolios.

During his years in Gujarat politics, Shah worked closely with PM Narendra Modi, who was then the state’s Chief Minister. Their political association later became central to the BJP’s national strategy.

In 2013, Shah became the BJP’s national general secretary and was placed in charge of Uttar Pradesh. The party’s strong performance in the state during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections marked a major milestone in his organisational career.

BJP President and National Expansion

In July 2014, Shah became BJP national president. During his tenure, the party expanded its presence across several states and secured victories in multiple Assembly elections. The BJP also won a second consecutive Lok Sabha majority in 2019.

Shah’s leadership focused on strengthening the party’s organisational structure, expanding its membership and coordinating election campaigns. He served as party president until 2020, becoming one of its most influential organisational leaders.

Home Minister and Major Policy Decisions

Following the BJP’s 2019 general election victory, Shah joined the Union Cabinet as Home Minister. One of the most significant decisions during his tenure came in August 2019, when Parliament approved the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 and the reorganisation of the former state into two Union Territories.

Shah also piloted the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which provides an expedited citizenship pathway for specified religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who meet its eligibility conditions. The legislation has generated considerable political debate.

Another major development came with the implementation of three new criminal laws on July 1, 2024, replacing the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act. The government presented the legislation as an effort to modernise India’s criminal justice system.

Shah has also prioritised internal security, action against narcotics and organised crime, and efforts to counter Maoist insurgency.

First Union Cooperation Minister

In July 2021, Shah became India’s first Union Minister of Cooperation after the government established a separate ministry. The ministry aims to strengthen cooperative institutions and improve their contribution to rural development, agriculture and local economic activity.

Its broader vision, Sahakar Se Samriddhi, seeks to promote prosperity through cooperation. Shah has continued to hold the portfolio alongside the Home Ministry following the 2024 general election.

On his 62nd birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Shah’s administrative understanding and efforts to strengthen India’s internal security systems. He also highlighted progress in tackling Maoism and advancing the goal of a drug-free society, wishing the minister a long and healthy life.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described Shah as a skilled strategist and organisational leader, praising his contributions to national security and the cooperative sector.

A Lasting Political Influence

Shah’s career reflects decades of organisational work, electoral campaigning and policymaking. As BJP president, he helped steer the party through successive national elections, while his ministerial tenure has placed him at the centre of major debates on security, citizenship and governance.

As he marks another birthday, Shah remains a key figure in the BJP and the PM Modi government, with his political legacy continuing to be shaped by policy outcomes, organisational strategy and public debate.
