Union Home Minister Amit Shah turned 62 on Thursday, October 22, marking a political journey spanning grassroots organisation, electoral strategy and major policy decisions at the national level.
Born in Mumbai on October 22, 1964, Shah grew up in Gujarat and studied biochemistry at Gujarat University. His political involvement began during his teenage years when he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and became associated with its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Shah joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1987 and took on organisational responsibilities in Ahmedabad. His early political career focused on building the party’s grassroots network and managing election campaigns.
Shah entered electoral politics in 1997, winning the Gujarat Assembly election from Sarkhej. He later represented Naranpura and served as a Minister in the Gujarat government from 2002, handling several portfolios.
In 2013, the Minister became the BJP’s National General Secretary and was assigned responsibility for Uttar Pradesh.
The party’s strong performance in the state during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections marked a significant milestone in his organisational career.
Shah became BJP National President in July 2014. During his tenure, the party expanded its presence across several states and secured a second consecutive Lok Sabha majority in 2019. He remained President until 2020.
Following the BJP’s 2019 election victory, Shah became Union Home Minister. In August that year, Parliament approved the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 and the reorganisation of the former state into two Union Territories.
Shah piloted the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. The law provides an expedited pathway to citizenship for eligible members of specified religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Three new criminal laws came into effect on July 1, 2024, replacing:
Shah has focused on internal security, combating narcotics and organised crime, and countering Maoist insurgency.
In July 2021, Shah became India’s first Union Minister of Cooperation following the establishment of a separate Ministry. Its Sahakar Se Samriddhi vision aims to strengthen cooperative institutions and support rural development, agriculture and local economic activity. He retained the portfolio after the 2024 general election.
Shah’s political career reflects decades of organisational work and policymaking. His legacy, however, continues to be shaped by his role in the BJP’s electoral expansion and his tenure overseeing key decisions on national security, citizenship and governance.
