Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in Kolkata on Saturday night for a brief visit to West Bengal, with plans to visit Belur Math and several community Durga Puja pandals on Sunday.
Shah is scheduled to land at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at around 08:10 PM from Ahmedabad. He will then travel to the state government guest house in Alipore, South Kolkata. No official engagements are scheduled for Saturday.
On Sunday, Shah will visit Belur Math in Howrah district, the international headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda. He is expected to arrive at 11:10 AM and remain there until 11:50 AM, participating in the Durga Puja celebrations and interacting with monks.
The Home Minister will then visit two prominent community Durga Puja pandals in Howrah before returning to the guest house for lunch.
In the afternoon, the Minister will visit three more pandals, one in South Kolkata and two in North Kolkata. He is scheduled to depart for New Delhi at 03:05 PM.
A West Bengal BJP leader said Shah’s visit would not include political or administrative engagements. The leader added that Shah was unlikely to deliver a political message during the festive period.
This year’s Durga Puja is the first since the change of government in West Bengal.
Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari inaugurated the celebrations at Eden Gardens on Mahalaya earlier this month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been expected to attend but could not make it.
Shah visited West Bengal during Durga Puja last year. He attended celebrations at Santosh Mitra Square, associated with BJP MLA Sajal Ghosh. He further inaugurated a pandal at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre in Salt Lake.
