Amit Shah To Roll Out Nationwide Mobile Alert System For Disaster Warnings

Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, will likely introduce a countrywide mobile-based emergency communication platform on Saturday, alongside Jyotiraditya Scindia, aimed at improving how disaster alerts reach the public.

The Department of Telecommunications developed the initiative in partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority to ensure quicker and more reliable transmission of warnings during critical situations.

At the centre of the system is SACHET, an integrated alert platform designed by Centre for Development of Telematics. The system is already functional across all States and Union Territories and delivers location-specific alerts via SMS, based on globally recognised communication standards.

Authorities noted that the platform has been widely utilised, with billions of messages already sent in multiple Indian languages to warn citizens about severe weather conditions, cyclones and other emergencies.

The scale of its deployment reflects the increasing reliance on digital tools for disaster preparedness and response.

To enhance speed and coverage, the government is now incorporating Cell Broadcast technology into the system.

Unlike standard SMS, this method can send alerts instantly to all mobile devices within a specific area, even when networks are congested.

Officials said the combined use of SMS and Cell Broadcast is likely to strengthen India’s disaster communication framework by making alerts more immediate and accessible during emergencies such as earthquakes, floods and industrial incidents.

As part of the rollout, the programme will include a nationwide trial. Residents in major urban regions, including Delhi-NCR, may receive sample alerts in different languages.

Authorities have clarified that these messages are only for testing purposes and have advised the public not to panic.
