Amit Shah To Launch National Conference On Extradition Strategies In New Delhi

On Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will unveil a two-day national conference titled ‘Extradition of Fugitives: Challenges and Strategies’ in New Delhi.

Organised by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the event will bring together senior officers from central and state law enforcement agencies to deliberate on ways to enhance global cooperation in tracing and bringing back fugitives wanted in India.

Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and other partner institutions will also be part of the discussions.

The conference will feature wide-ranging deliberations on:

• Strengthening formal and informal international cooperation mechanisms,
• Using technology to track offenders,
• Developing strategic frameworks for extradition, and
• Analysing the financial footprints of wanted individuals

Special thematic sessions will focus on key challenges linked to narcotics smuggling, terrorism, cybercrime, organised crime, and financial offences.

Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, the Government of India has been intensifying efforts to deepen international collaboration in criminal investigations and law enforcement.

Earlier in July, Shah had urged a synchronised and time-bound approach to secure the return of fugitives from abroad.

The conference seeks to translate that goal into practical strategies through coordinated legal and diplomatic engagement.

Currently, India has over 300 extradition requests awaiting action from foreign governments.

Authorities acknowledge that many of these cases remain delayed as fugitives exploit legal and procedural gaps in the countries where they reside.

A number of these offenders are linked to organised criminal syndicates. They continue their activities from overseas. This, however, poses serious challenges to law enforcement.

During the two-day event, experts and senior officers will work towards developing actionable solutions and a comprehensive roadmap for speeding up extradition processes.

Amit Shah had previously launched the BHARATPOL portal. It is a digital platform developed by the CBI.

The portal links district and state police units with central agencies for the seamless exchange of intelligence and operational data.

The CBI expects that the insights emerging from the conference will strengthen coordination among agencies. They also aim to develop innovative strategies to enhance India’s pursuit of fugitives.

These efforts, however, remain intended to reinforce the nation’s commitment to justice.
