Amit Shah To Launch Delhi’s 70 Lakh Tree Plantation Campaign Today

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate Delhi’s ambitious afforestation initiative on Tuesday. The campaign aims to plant 70 lakh trees across the national capital.

To support the effort, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will conduct a large-scale plantation programme at 34 different sites.

NDMC Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal said the Council has planned to plant nearly 600 trees along with 50,000 shrubs under the campaign.

Preparatory work is already underway, with officials having readied more than 50,000 pits for planting activities.

The drive will focus on indigenous and environmentally resilient species, including Peepal, Neem, Jamun, Imli, Champa, Ashoka, Gulmohar and Amaltas.

Authorities will also introduce a variety of ornamental and native shrubs to enrich biodiversity and improve the appearance of public green areas. These include Hamelia, Justicia, Canna, Lily and Murraya.

Chahal said elected representatives, department heads, officials, and employees of the NDMC will participate in plantation activities across different parts of the Council area. He stressed that the organisation considers tree plantation an ongoing environmental mission rather than a symbolic one-day exercise.

The NDMC has already completed 31 consecutive editions of its ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam – On Sunday’ initiative.

In addition, the civic body regularly organises plantation programmes during national celebrations, public gatherings, and other important occasions.

The campaign has received strong support from Resident Welfare Associations, Market Traders Associations, schools, institutions, and residents.

Chahal said the widespread involvement demonstrates the spirit of Jan Bhagidari and reflects growing public commitment to environmental protection.

The NDMC currently manages approximately 1,450 acres of green areas. These include major parks, neighbourhood gardens, school green zones, roundabouts, market landscapes and nearly 15,000 roadside trees.

Despite administering only about 3 per cent of Delhi’s total land area, the Council contributes nearly 55 per cent of the city’s green cover. This highlights its significant role in maintaining Delhi’s ecological balance.

The Council’s contribution far exceeds the size of the area under its administration.
