Amit Shah To Chair BJP MLAs’ Meeting In Kolkata To Finalise Bengal CM

On Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to arrive in Kolkata to oversee a key meeting of BJP legislators that will likely determine the party’s chief ministerial face in West Bengal.

The BJP legislature party meeting will focus on electing the leader of the House, a decision that will effectively clear the way for the formation of the state’s first BJP-led government.

Senior central leaders are closely involved in the selection process as the party prepares for the transition of power following its Assembly election victory.

The political developments come a day after the formal dissolution of the 17th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Governor-issued notifications brought the Assembly’s term to an official end on May 7, marking the conclusion of the previous government’s tenure.

Even after the dissolution, outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has continued using the designation ‘Chief Minister of West Bengal’ across her social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram and X.

The election results have also drawn attention because of constituency-level voting and voter roll trends in several seats won by the BJP.

According to election data, the BJP won 95 constituencies where the number of deleted voter names reportedly exceeded the eventual victory margin. The party won 80 constituencies it had not held earlier.

The BJP retained all 77 seats it won in the 2021 elections and additionally secured 130 new seats in this election.

Key Seats Draw Attention

In Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee lost to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes, while the reported voter deletions in the constituency stood at 45,240.

Similar trends recorded in other seats. In Tollyganj, minister Aroop Biswas lost by 6,013 votes with over 33,000 deletions reported.

Jadavpur witnessed a BJP victory margin of 27,716 votes alongside more than 45,000 deleted names, while in Indus, the BJP retained the constituency by only 900 votes with 4,617 voter deletions recorded.

With government formation now entering its final stage, political focus has shifted to the BJP’s legislative meeting, where the party will likely formally choose the leader who will become West Bengal’s next Chief Minister.
