Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Meghalaya, on Thursday.
Governors, Chief Ministers, and senior government representatives from all eight Northeastern states will gather to discuss the region’s development priorities.
Joining the meeting will be Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, who also serves as the council’s Vice-Chairman.
The North Eastern Council, a key regional planning body, has played an important role in coordinating developmental efforts across the Northeast for more than five decades.
The latest session will review ongoing initiatives and explore new opportunities to drive growth and strengthen connectivity.
In a statement shared on social media, the NEC noted that the meeting would focus on strategies aimed at accelerating development, enhancing infrastructure, and promoting sustainable progress throughout the region.
As preparations intensified ahead of the Shillong session, Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) reviewed the state’s readiness during a meeting held in Aizawl earlier this week.
During the review, the Governor highlighted the Centre’s continued emphasis on the Northeast’s advancement and stressed the importance of effectively presenting Mizoram’s developmental requirements and proposals before the council.
Officials examined the progress of several projects being implemented through NEC assistance and programmes under the Ministry of DoNER.
These include schemes funded through NEC allocations, NESIDS (Roads), NESIDS (OTRI), and PM-DevINE, all designed to strengthen infrastructure and support socio-economic development.
The meeting also served as a platform to finalise key proposals that Mizoram intends to place before the council, with particular focus on public welfare, infrastructure upgrades, and economic expansion.
Senior policymakers and state leaders will use the meeting to shape the next phase of investment, infrastructure expansion, and inclusive growth across the region.
