Amit Shah To Attend Gujarat Vidyapith Convocation On August 27

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Gujarat on August 27 and attend the 72nd convocation ceremony of Gujarat Vidyapith in Ahmedabad as the chief guest, the university said on Monday.

The ceremony will begin at 4:30 PM at Pranjivan Vidyarthi Bhavan on the institution’s historic Gandhi campus.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Harshad Patel said Shah had accepted the invitation, while Governor and Chancellor Acharya Devvrat will deliver the convocation address.

A total of 900 students from 18 departments across seven faculties will receive degrees.

The graduating cohort includes 184 undergraduate students, 400 postgraduate students, 232 students from postgraduate programmes, 21 postgraduate diploma holders and 63 MPhil/PhD candidates.

The group comprises 441 women and 459 men, with 559 students expected to attend in person.

Twelve students will receive Mandir and Dhwaj medals based on achievements beyond academics.

The selection process draws on Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of Nai Talim and evaluates areas including leadership camps, padyatras, NSS and NCC, community service, internships, fieldwork, sports, research, innovation, cultural activities and ethical conduct.

The convocation will continue the institution’s tradition of hosting prominent national figures.

President Droupadi Murmu was the chief guest at the 71st convocation last year.

Former Presidents Rajendra Prasad, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Zakir Husain, Giani Zail Singh, Shankar Dayal Sharma and Pranab Mukherjee, along with the Dalai Lama, have been associated with its convocation ceremonies.

Founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920, Gujarat Vidyapith has traditionally linked its convocation with its October 18 foundation day, though the date has varied according to the chief guest’s convenience.

The university said it has separately observed its foundation day over the past three years.
